July 10- Ness City - One of KS's 8 great architectural wonders
Ness Bank Co. had this built in 1885 for a mere $75k! You couldn't do one arch for that now! They crushed limestone for the mortar instead of sand so it would more closely match the adjacent stonework. The building is known now as "the skyscraper of the plains" and it serves as a merchant mart for Kansas products and goods. Closed when we were there but interesting to see. The town was very quiet. The streets were paved with brick like many of the areas we are coming through...better for running the herds on perhaps.
